Monday 6/17

The reason we are three days early into Glasgow is that we discovered that the national tour of Calendar Girls – the Musical would be at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow in the weeks before the tour. In Wausau, we ordered tickets online for Monday evening. Calendar Girls started as a movie, then became a professional stage play, which was later released for amateur rights for only 15 months to be snapped up by 800 amateur theater groups for over 2500 performances, and then developed as a musical in 2017 which played in London’s West End. It is now on its UK national tour, and the cast is several theater, radio, and television celebs. The Kings Theatre is a grand old lady from 1905.The show offers 7 meaty acting and singing roles for women 40 to 70 years, several men, and several teenagers who have their own spring awakening. A few buns and other decorous nearly nude opportunities are a necessary part of the story. Before the show, we enjoyed a pre-ordered drink in the Picture Lounge, a bar on the Grand Circle level with pictures of various talent that have performed in the theatre: Lawrence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, James Mason, John Gielgud, Bela Lugosi, Katherine Hepburn, Dolly Parton, and more.Althoug she hasn’t performed here, Paula agreed to have her picture taken.
